I hated that movie. It was so slow and depressing at the start that by the time anything really started happening I just couldn't bring myself to care. I could never finish it and I've tried about three times now. This is saying a lot because I would pretty much watch Clive Owen clipping his toenails or sleeping, I like him so much. He's very very ridiculously good looking. I've watched tons of movies that weren't happy or upbeat, and plenty of movies that didn't have action going from the start, but this movie...just no. Something about it bored me to the point of near anger.

For the most part

I just felt that I somehow didn't 'get' the point of the movie and when it was finally done, I felt that it was unfinished. Didn't like it much myself even though I also usually love Clive Owen.

:0 I'm shocked that you hated it, but I admit I tolerate a slower moving plot more than most people.

I'm surprised

Every scene to me reinforced the plot of the film and the chaos of the setting. I also thought it did a good job capturing the anxiety, helplessness and panic of a world with no future.

I'm all about dynamics, so maybe my viewpoint is different from others. To me it is essential to minimize the impact of adjacent material to increase the effectiveness of peaks and climaxes. We Need to Talk About Kevin moved at a snails pace the entire movie, but completely impacted the climax of the film. That climax justified anything that may have been considered mundane leading up to it. I felt the same way about this film and considering the wartime journalistic quality of film making and long seamless takes it just increased my interest.

I just watched this film recently & I'm shocked it didn't get a bigger following
Another Happy Day http://youtu.be/LuW2UgYSsTQ
Ezra Miller who plays Kevin in We Need To Talk About Kevin plays another messed up kid, it may be his archetype but he plays it so well.
Ellen Barkin is amazing in it & Ellen Burstyn also, she again plays her archetype role but why change a winning formula.
Thomas Hayden Church, Demi Moore & Kate Bosworth are nice surprises in smaller roles.

Sam Levinson does an amazing job with this movie how it didn't receive any Oscar or award attention is beyond me especially Barkin who deserved a nod.

Re

Two films, from very different ends of the spectrum.

The Life Of David Gale - Gripping throughout, with Kevin Spacey in top form.

Sex Drive - Just makes me laugh everytime. American Pie is very funny, but Sex Drive is its equal, yet has sadly been overlooked.

Unbreakable

Sad thing about unbreakable. It was going to be a trilogy but this idea was let go when it didn't do as well as the sixth sense in theaters. :-(

Yeah, I wish it would have done better in theaters. I would have loved to see a sequel.

Good List

Good list...

A few comments:

• 'History of Violence' is brilliant and should have won the Oscar that year.
• 'Half Nelson' is terrific, I'd watch Gosling in just about anything.
• 'Animal Kingdom' was the best movie of 2010.

A few additions:

• 'Junebug' - got attention mainly for Amy Adams' performance, but an amazing character-driven film
• 'Stone' - written by the writer of Junebug, great performance by Edward Norton, and DeNiro's first interesting performance in many a year
• 'Lars and the Real Girl' - Gosling and the rest of the cast take a story that shouldn't work and make it work
• 'Cutters Way' - not perfect, but a solid mood piece with some great performances from Jeff Bridges and others
• 'Off the Map' - terrific small movie with Joan Allen and Sam Elliot
• 'Edge of Darkness' - overshadowed by Mel Gibson's increasingly bizarre off-screen behavior, but a really solid movie
• 'Splice' - flawed, but an audacious fresh take on the basic Frankenstein story, with Sarah Polley and Adrian Brody

did you know...

There is a conspiracy theory very similar to the basis of this film? Mining on the moon... cities on the dark side... even mining on Mars. I wonder sometimes if Hollywood gets it's ideas from insane geniuses or if the insane get quasi-genius ideas from Hollywood.

Being a genious and being insane are 2 sides of the same coin and the border between the 2 is very small.
