re

Too much of a generation/culture gap for me to get into them, which is too bad because I really wanted to find out -why- they are so renowned..

Maybe they are and even were in there time, but you have to admit they still make the news today, and that they did influence many in their time.

They are still the band which has sold the most.

"They are still the band which has sold the most."

lol @ that. Back when The Beatles were actually relevant, The Monkees (yes, I said the fucking Monkees) outsold The Beatles and The Rolling Stones COMBINED. So what does that say?

seriously? The Monkees? yeah they did infact with a song written by Neil Diamond not theirs and they didnt last long did they now?

The Monkees were an American invention as a Beatles type band and it failed, by the time The Monkees came on stage The Beatles were already world famous and unlike The Monkees, the The Bealtes are still known all over the world despite the fact they broke up 40 years ago.

Like I said before overrated? maybe but they are still known and their music is still played and they still hold the record for the most sold records and not the monkees.

Re

not in spanish speaking countries. I asked several of my students if they knew them, these are kids 14 to 17 and none of them knew who the heck I was talking about and all of them knew who the beatles were and could name a few of their songs.

Well that just goes to show you how the record companies manipulated people cos as you know

The Monkees didnt know how to play. They were like many groups like Moby Grape or Mili Vanili

who just put the face but not the music. But real music lover followed the The Beatles not The Monkees.

And The Beatles still sells and have many fans (like it or not)

..........Now do confess you bought their records back then , didnt you?? :guitar:

The music, yes, but many of the lyrics are just downright stupid... love me do, I love you, you know it's true, yada yada, blah blah. Some Beatles songs are that painfully embarrassing to listen to that I turn off the radio when they're on.
