Rules of the game

Reversi / Othello

Aim of the game
Reversi / Othello is a board game invented in England at the end of the 19th century. Both players place pieces of their colour on the board, trying to recolour as many pieces into one's own colour as possible. Each player has to line the adversarial pieces which then are flipped and show one's own colour.

Starting the game
For opening the new game one can choose between two variants of the game: "Reversi" and "Othello". The only difference is the initial setting of pieces in the middle: Reversi starts with two parallel rows and Othello with two crossed ones.

Course of the game
Each player has to line at least one of the adversary's pieces per turn. To line means to place a piece on the board in a way that one's adversary's row or rows is/are mutually circumscribed either horizontally or vertically or diagonally by a piece of oneself. There must not be a gap in between.
Relevant are only the rows lined by the piece placed last. Valid fields are shown by the mouse cursor changing into a cross and the field flashing up.
In case a lining is not possible, one gets a corresponding message and it is the adversary's turn.

Winning
The game ends as soon as no player can place anymore. The winner is the player with most pieces in one's own colour.
