Writing the second essay for my graduate school application. Now comes the fun, yet still difficult part.
"Clearly describe your reasons for pursuing a career in OT and how your personal experiences and background have contributed to your preparation for this career choice."
And how do I start off by answering that? By opening with a quote from The Dark Knight Rises. Man I hope they don't think I'm crazy but it seems to set the mood for my essay quite nicely XD
What does it mean to be a hero? I always admired the tales of superheros saving cities and the world when I was a child. How they made the world a safer place. I was even naive to think that if I got bitten by a spider I would suddenly inherit powers like Spider Man (probably why my mother always kept me away from them) and be able to accomplish amazing things. I've always had a desire to help people, but I never knew in what capacity I could achieve this. I was recently inspired after watching The Dark Knight Rises about what a true hero is. To quote from the movie "A hero can be anyone. Doing anything. Even as simple as someone putting a coat over a young boy's shoulders to let him know the world hadn't ended". That quote has stuck with me ever since. I've had the pleasure of volunteering in a long term care home and working with an OT. This has opened my eyes to the field and made me appreciate how precious (and how much we take for granted) our ability to move and participate in our occupations. I feel a great sense of pride and personal fulfillment in helping the residents regain their mobility. I want to pursue a career in OT to be a real life hero to those in need. To let them know that others care. To let them know their world hasn't ended and they can enjoy life, their occupations, once again.
Let me know what you think (for some of you such as LiveStrange, you might already be expecting such craziness and therefore it won't be any surprise =P )
