Jonathan Livingston SeagullOther · August 30th, 2012 22:10 · 1 comment I never saw the movie or knew much about the book but I bought the book today. It is a short book. I think this book might be for me based on the description on the back cover: This is a story for people who follow their hearts and make their own rules...people who get special pleasure out of doing something well, even if only for themselves...people who know there's more to this living than meets the eye: they'll be right there with Jonathan, flying higher and faster than they ever dreamed. Most of the birds have returnedOther · August 30th, 2012 21:08 · 3 comments Most of the birds have returned after what I suspect was a hawk attack. Maybe a few less than before but many came back. The only birds that never left were the cardinals. They seem like highly intelligent birds who would be less likely to be prey for predators. Watching them they are always moving their heads like they are constantly alert to their surroundings. I think for all beings, the higher your consciousness the less there is to fear. I had an odd relationship with her. She became obsessed with me I think because I could ace just about any class I took. I started falling in love with her from the attention she gave me. She would call me multiple times a day in addition to all the time we spent at the college. She treated me like the smartest person she knew. I think she loved me in the sense that you might love someone you think is wise or smart but there was no future for us. It took me a long time to realize that. Another factor is she was orthodox Jewish and I don't think she would ever marry a non-Jew. This song makes me think of her because of the way her eyes would shine when she looked at me. ![]() Cunningham ParkOther · August 27th, 2012 17:43 · 1 comment Continuing my exploration of Queens parks, I went to Cunningham Park. It is a flatter park with fewer hills and lots of open spaces with ball fields and tennis courts. It doesn't really have the trails like in Alley Pond Park or to a lesser degree Kissena Park. It has a walking path that goes around the perimeter of the park. Once again, someone started a conversation with me in the park, the guy with the German Shepherd in the bottom picture. I can't help it, people just want to get to know me.

Just before the U.S. Open they used to have the Hamlet Tournament on Long Island as a warmup to the Open. I don't think they have it anymore. Anyway a couple of girls in my office at Citibank ended up with an extra ticket to the Hamlet. They couldn't find anyone to go so at the last minute they asked me. To be honest they didn't really like me much I think because I was hired at a higher level than them but who knows. So I went. It was a John McEnroe match near the end of his career. After work I drove by myself to the match. You had to park in a lot and then take a bus to the courts. I get there and there are the two girls from work and a girlfriend of one of them. So here I am with three women, two who don't really like me and a third who I didn't know. It could have been uncomfortable but I decided on a different strategy. I started chatting up the girlfriend. She liked the attention and we sort of hit it off. The other two were silently stewing. Then as things were going great a torrential thunderstorm started. It was one of the heaviest rains I have seen. There was no thought of staying so everyone left the stadium and headed for the buses to the parking lot. Lucky me I had an umbrella and my new lady friend didn't. So I opened up my umbrella and we were pressed up against each other as we headed to the buses. Then she says to me under the umbrella to get closer. I didn't see how that was physically possible. We get to the buses and they are packed. That is when we got separated in the crowd in the bus. When we got to the parking lot it was still coming done in buckets and I couldn't find her. That night reminds me of this song by the Hollies called "Bus Stop" about sharing an umbrella in August at a bus stop. And by the way, McEnroe won that night. I think a hawk or some other predator must have gobbled up one of them and scared off the others. I saw that happen last year and the birds went away for a day or two but they came back. I also saw two squirrels this morning stretched out on a branch in the tree just looking. There was several peanuts and they were just looking at them from the tree. When the hawk came last year a squirrel did the same thing, hiding in the tree. A few birds did come and eat this afternoon but they left quickly instead of hanging out. This time I went to a different part of the park, a couple of miles from where I went last time. It is a huge park covering a lot of land. I went to a trail that was the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway about a hundred years ago. It goes on for miles. I walked about a mile on it before turning around. Much of it is uphill so it gives you a good workout. Three people said hello to me on the trail, including the blonde jogger in the bottom picture. She said hello as she came up from behind. Getting back to nature is good for the soul.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Meet Virginia - TrainOther · August 23rd, 2012 22:08 I haven't written enough about the Virginia in my life. When I was working at Citibank they had a reorganization and they assigned a girl named Virginia to work for me. She was already working at Citibank but the made me her manager. She was a year or so out of college. I usually like to hire my own people but we got along very well. A year or so later I quit Citibank for another company and after I left we started hanging out and doing stuff. We both liked amusement parks so we went to a number of them - Disneyland in California, Great Adventure in New Jersey, and Rye Playland in NY. Sometimes we would just hang out on the weekend in the park. It was an odd relationship because she was sort of engaged to another guy at the time but heck I liked her too. She did eventually marry the guy but they divorced about a year later. I wasn't surprised. What I remember about her was after I left Citibank I would sometimes see her on the subway platform. She was going uptown and I was going downtown, so we were separated by several sets of train tracks. She would yell hello to me across the platforms. She was an outgoing girl and she would say hey sam what are you doing this weekend, let's hang out. Mind you the whole Wall Street subway station could hear her. I loved every second of it. I had a phone handset that kept beeping when it was on its charger. This started last year and for over six months it would beep before it got fully charged. I would leave it off its charger and then charge it until it started beeping. A couple of months ago it stopped beeping and I can now leave it on the charger. The other thing was a paper shredder. It had stopped working and there was no visible reason like paper jams. I have another shredder and when I used it I would check the broken one. It never worked. It didn't look like they were cleaning it up so I went up to the guy with the mower and showed him the stuff and he cleaned it up. Today I came home and a different landscaper was doing a bunch of other houses near me. I stayed in my car and pretended to be texting but I was watching to see if they would blow crap on my side of the street. Well a guy blew crap right at my car and I had to close the window or it would have gone inside the car. It left a layer of crud on my windshield. I could have used the wipers to clean it but I thought what was the point of sitting in my car if I take crap like this. I got out and walked over to the boss. I wasn't angry or afraid. I opened my arms with my palms up like I was confused. I said your guy just left debris on my windshield. I showed him and he said I needed to wash my car. I said the windshield was clean before the guy came by with the blower. He had him come back and blow the crap off. Not a big deal but it is minor annoyances like this that get under your skin. Mike Francesa could use a vacation. Last week, he screamed over a caller who caught him, a caller who mentioned Francesa’s previous take on what R.A. Dickey’s future salary could become was very low. It is pretty much what I have been doing with this blog and I think it works. 1. Write down all the crap clogging your brain. As soon as you write down the details you no longer have to dwell on them. The benefits of an uncluttered mind is that ideas and resolutions to your issues will begin to manifest themselves daily. 2. Write down your present situation. It creates answers to situations that have been bugging you. 3. Write down your dreams and thoughts. Writing them down help you see a more clear and focused picture of them. 4. Find a quiet park or garden where you can sit and think, read, or write for an hour. 5. Read something positive, and write down the most inspiring quotes. 6. Mentally go to all the positive places where you've been before. Those thoughts will lead you to stories and lessons - write them down right away. Then blog them. 7. Blog your thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Your ideas may matter to some people in the world. That is an attractive quality. Then I think we started to become more than friends. I remember one night after class we were walking to the parking lot and it started raining. We ran under a doorway but got soaked anyway. Being in the rain, at night, alone with her, well it was sort of a special moment. She was older than me but I don't know exactly how much older. Anyway she invited me to come over to her apartment one night to study. She was the first woman I knew who had her own place, that is not living with her parents. I didn't know if this was really just a study date or a real date. I mean if it was just a study date we would more likely meet someplace on campus. I went to her place and was sort of nervous. I played it straight as a study night and I really think I messed up. Afterward in class she was sort of cold to me. The semester ended and I never saw her again. I found her on facebook today. I wasn't sure if it was her because she is older but still very nice looking. I confirmed it was her because she listed the college in her career stuff. She is a big time lawyer now which is a little surprising since she seemed a little ditzy back then. I don't mean she was dumb or anything but she didn't seem like a very serious student. She supported herself in college by selling stuff at flea markets at Aqueduct racetrack. Then I did some more googling of her name and I found out that her husband just died in July of a heart attack. Funny how I got the idea to look for her on facebook at this particular time. ![]() ![]() How do you recognize divine intervention?Other · August 5th, 2012 01:41 This topic was in the newspaper today and answered by several clergymen. The following response is from a Rabbi. I think it makes sense to me, and by its definition I have had divine intervention in my life multiple times in big ways. But if so, why? How do you recognize divine intervention? You first must accept that there is a plan for everything. Then, you have to understand synchronicity. For example, a man and a woman both alter their schedules and end up in the exact same place at the same time. If either had arrived even two minutes earlier, they wouldn't have met, fallen in love and married. Another key factor is that it implies an unusual occurrence. For example, you never get sick, but this day you get sick and don't go to work. On the same day, the train you regularly take is involved in a crash. Third, it cannot be fully explained by the known laws of nature. The example: Someone gets struck by lightning twice and survives both times. I did my good deed of the dayOther · August 4th, 2012 18:10 · 1 comment I was walking down Queens Boulevard this morning. It is a very busy street and is the road you usually see them driving on in the King of Queens show. There was a traffic cone on its side blocking the right lane. There was no reason for it to be there, and it probably got bounced around from some construction about a block away. There was no traffic at the time so I thought what the heck and walked over and moved it to the curb with my foot. I like doing quickie good deeds like that. It gives me a lift. Saint Charles - Jefferson StarshipOther · August 4th, 2012 12:33 Ever have a dream that made you feel so good when you woke up?Other · August 4th, 2012 10:14 I just had a dream about my friend Nora who I haven't seen in person since 1998. But we had a "dream thing" going on when we used to hang out together. Once I had a dream about seeing her on the subway and I told her. Then a few days later she told me she had a dream about me. So that was the beginning of our dream connection. Stuff happened in life and we didn't hang out anymore but the dream connection has continued. Once at a very low point in my life she was there for me in a dream. I also saw her in a dream about a year ago when she told me she was going to college. Last night I saw her again in my dream. It is hard to say how long a dream lasts but we spent a bunch of time together. Then as I was holding her I said to her that I missed her so much. I woke up shortly after. But I didn't get the feeling that you usually get when you wake up that it was only a dream. I felt great and I believe that on some level of reality I was with her again. Jeff, who lives at homeOther · August 3rd, 2012 22:40 I just watched this movie. It is very good. It is episodic and is not really focused on Jeff living at home. I liked all of it except the weird Susan Sarandon romance. Maybe tomorrow, maybe somedayOther · August 3rd, 2012 13:15 You've changed your place in this world. "Talk of the Town" - The Pretenders Nail in tireOther · August 2nd, 2012 19:20 · 1 comment Found a nail in my tire. The tire only lost a pound of air so it's not flat but they can't fix it because it is near the sidewall. Mavis Tire has to order it so it will probably take a couple of days to get it.
![]() Police funeralOther · August 2nd, 2012 16:47 This was an impressive sight today. I am guessing it was a police officer's funeral or maybe someone important to get a police detail.
![]() Another tale from the supermarketOther · August 2nd, 2012 14:35 I went to a different supermarket this morning. I saw a display of Band-Aids that were on sale. Two boxes for $5 so I took them. The sign said you have to buy two. No problem there. This store only has self checkout until 8 AM. I scanned them and they rang up at $4.49 each. I told the woman monitoring the checkouts and she says no they are not on sale. I tell her the sign says they are and we go back to the display. The sign reads "Band-Aid Variety Pack, two for $5". The boxes I took were right above the sign and are called "Band-Aid Variety Pack". The woman goes "no, this is a different UPC code". The UPC code of course is that set of bars that are only machine readable, so it wasn't worth arguing over. I didn't buy them.
